A Golden Rectangle is a rectangle which has sides in proportion to Phi. The illustration below shows a rectangle with its long side 1.618 times the length of the shorter side. If a square is cut away from the larger rectangle, another Golden Rectangle remains (as shown below).

These pages have a variation of the Golden Rectangle as a background image, with the violet column to the left having a ratio of 1:1.618 to the wider yellow column. The colors chosen are complementary, also lending balance to the page layout, with the darker color in the smaller of the two areas.
