Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician who lived from 1170-1228. From a study of the reproduction of rabbits, Fibonacci discovered a series of numbers which are represented numerous places in creation. This sequence begins:
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 . . .
Beginning with two ones, the next number of the sequence is the sum of the previous two numbers (1 + 1 = 2; 1 + 2 = 3; 2 + 3 = 5; 3 + 5 = 8; 5 + 8 = 13; etc).
Combining squares with sides the length of the numbers in this sequence can be arranged in a pattern creating a Golden Rectangle. Connecting opposite corners of squares in this arrangement creates a logorithmic spiral as illustrated below.
